Provenance: The materials in this collection were donated by Jan Butters in June of 2002. She was in charge of the Save Outdoor Sculpture (S.O.S.) project from 1994 to 1995. The nationwide project was the first comprehensive national survey of publicly accessible outdoor art. The programs two goals were to complete an inventory of publicly accessible outdoor sculpture in the U.S. and to increase public awareness about the need to provide on-going care for these monuments.
Arrangement: Materials were arranged in topical order.
Copyright: The materials in the collection may be assumed to be copyrighted by the creator of those materials. The museum advises patrons that it is their responsibility to procure from the owner of the copyright permission to reproduce, publish, or exhibit these materials. The owner of the copyright is presumed to be the creator, his or her heirs, legates, or assignees. Patrons must obtain written permission from The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum Starsmore Center for Local History to reproduce, publish, or exhibit these materials. Scope Note: The Save Outdoor Sculpture Collection consists primarily of materials gathered during the S.O.S project.
All materials were donated by Jan Butters who was in charge of the project from 1994 to 1995 and who produced the book that is the final product of the S.O.S. project.
The collection has been divided into three series to reflect the nature of materials involved. These are: Documents; Published Materials; and Images.
Contents: Documents
Scope note: This series consists of materials that document the Save Outdoor Sculpture project. The documents were created by a number of people who worked on the project. The materials include an inventory of sculptures and artists, a report to the Smithsonian Institution about the project, layouts, and handwritten notes.

S.O.S. Inventory: Includes the zip code of where the sculpture was found, and the title, artist(s), location, and address of each sculpture in the project.

Random Documents: Layouts about Colorado Springs sculptures, possibly for a book, used to wrap photographs. Includes a handwritten note about the S.O.S. project.

Scope note: This series consists of materials that were published, they pertain to the S.O.S. project, sculptures, and art. The materials were created by a number of people who worked on the project and various outside entities who specialize in art and sculpture. The materials include a book that was a product of the S.O.S. project, and other books, catalogs, and brochures pertaining to art and sculpture.

Scope note: This series consists of visual materials pertaining to the S.O.S project. The materials were created by a number of people who worked on the project. The materials include photographs, contact prints, negatives and slides of sculptures in Colorado Springs and Manitou that were part of the S.O.S. project.
