Photograph Collection

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Kodaker’s Paradise Palmer Park Man with Camera Standley (1931)

The rich visual heritage of the Pikes Peak Region is documented in over 80,000 historical photographs, the bulk of which date from the late nineteenth century to the early 1930s and represent a wide variety of early photographic processes. This extensive collection is a result of generous donations from individuals, families, and community organizations.

Notable collections include: Harry L. Standley, Negro Historical Association of Colorado Springs (see link below), Frederick Stehr, Charles Emery, H.S. Poley, Lloyd Knutson and Bill Bowers, Florence Sprague, B.H. Gurnsey, Sara Cartwright Jackson Loomis, and Laura Gilpin.

Digitization: In 1999 the staff of the Starsmore Center for Local History began a major project of digitizing its substantial collection of photographs and documents. As distinct collections are scanned and processed, highlights will be made available through the Museum’s database. Currently, the CSPM staff digitizes historic photographs for the database as time allows.
