The manuscript collection contains unpublished personal and business papers including correspondence, ephemera, diaries, records, photographs, and other documents providing scholars and students primary source material related to the history and culture of the Pikes Peak Region. Manuscript collections are hand-written, type-written, or printed materials created by an individual, business or organization. Manuscripts are by their very nature unique to a repository as they aren’t produced in multiple copies. These documents are primary sources that can be used to study, analyze and interpret the history of not only the Pikes Peak Region but events on the state and national level as well.
The following is an inventory of holdings in the Starsmore Center for Local History. Research is by appointment only. Please contact the archives to make an appointment to view collections: sclh@coloradosprings.gov. Due to the volume of request, it may take 7 – 10 days for a response.

Abbott Pamphlet: Single brochure which includes information on Crystal Park Road tours.
AdAmAn Collection: Approximately 25 cubic feet of materials documenting the AdAmAn club (1922-2002). The AdAmAn Club was founded by the “Frozen Five,” Fred Morath, Ed Morath, Willis Magee, Harry Standley and Fred Barr. These men climbed to the summit of Pikes Peak to celebrate New Year’s and the tradition continues to this day. Materials include photographs, newspaper clippings, club administration papers, publicity, items relating to the Colorado Centennial, and various individual members. Adelman Newspaper: Single issue of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, July 7th, 1877. Cover art depicts four men illegally obtaining alcohol in Colorado Springs above caption, “evading the liquor law in Colorado Springs.”
Aiken Family Collection: (1882-1936) Four folders of material related to Colorado’s pioneer naturalist Charles Aiken and his sister Jessie, an artist. Collection includes musical programs, tributes to Charles Aiken, materials related to Aiken Ornithological Society, and a typescript of field notes taken on a trip from Colorado to Arizona in 1876.
Alexander Industries Collection: One and one-third cubic feet of papers and photographs related to the Alexander Film Company, Alexander Industries, Alexite and Alexander Aircraft. Collection contains programs, publications, Art Department display materials, commercial stills and photographs.
Architectural Survey Collection: Includes results and documentation of architectural survey reports conducted for downtown Colorado Springs, Shook’s Run, the West Side, and Mesa Springs. Includes some photographs.

Barnes, Jack Duane Ph.D. Thesis: Simeon Nash Nye, Pioneer Colorado Theater Manager: 1882-1914 (165 pp.) Includes Appendix A: Chronological Record of Productions in Colorado Springs from 1875 to 1881. Appendix B: Alphabetical List of Plays By Title Presented in Colorado Springs Before the Opening of the Opera House and at the Opera House from 1881 to 1914. Appendix C: Entries from James A. Curran’s Diary with References to Simeon N. Nye and Colorado Theatre.
Bartlett, Landell Collection: (1917-1973) Three fourths cubic foot of daily diaries of Colorado Springs resident covering the years of 1917 and 1943 -1973. Diaries include information on day to day life in the Pikes Peak Region as well as commentary on world events. Bartlett was an accountant for Holly Sugar Corporation, a member of a poetry society, and a member of the American Legion.
Becker Collection: (1918-1976) One map of the United States, one Out West catalog, and one framed certificate from the United States Treasury Department allowing Out West to issue stamps.
Bills Materials: One framed Spring Tourist Edition of the Colorado Springs Sunday Gazette and Telegraph. Article title is, “‘High, Wide, and Handsome’ is New Ute Pass Road.” Article about opening of Ute Pass highway. Includes six photographs.
Birdsall, George Collection: Three cubic feet of papers related to the life, career and family of George Birdsall. Birdsall came to the Pikes Peak Region as a young man, served as the Police Chief of Colorado City in at the age of seventeen, and went on to become Mayor of Colorado Springs in the 1930s .
Bixler, Kristine M.: Manuscript, 23pp. The Golden Years: A History of the Golden Cycle Mill.
Bock, John S. Collection: One and one half cubic feet of papers and photographs related to the history of Red Rock Canyon and the development of the Red Rock Canyon Real Estate Development Project. Collection includes materials related to the military service of John S. Bock, the activities of Kenmuir and Trinidad Quarries, and the literary and poetry typescripts written by John G. Bock.
Bollman, Fred O. Collection: (1850-1970) One cubic foot of ephemera, photographs, viewbooks, publications, and negatives pertaining to the Bollman family of Colorado Springs.
Boothroyd, Frederick Collection: (1900-1955) Two and one third cubic feet of material related to the professional career of symphony conductor and organist Frederick Boothroyd. Mr. Boothroyd designed the organs for Shove Chapel, Grace Episcopal, First Christian and First Methodist Churches in Colorado Springs. Bowman, Oliver S. Collection: Materials related to Oliver Bowman, founder and president of Heliopore Engineering Laboratories, including business papers from Heliopore Engineering Laboratories, correspondence, blueprints, financial documents, Department of Interior Hearings, coal carbonization, and photographs. Related collections are the Alva Henderson Collection and the Sophie Rath Thomas Collection.
Bozick, Rudolf: 1 cubic foot of materials relating to Rudolf Bozick (1891-1973), of Calhan, Colorado. Subjects include World War I, World War II, and the Sky Sox baseball club.
Breckenridge, Juanita and John Tapes Collection: One cubic foot of materials relating to book, El Paso County Heritage, by Juanita and John Breckenridge. Includes 174 audio cassette tapes with interviews, and one third cubic foot of edited materials and notes. Book published in 1985.
Broadmoor Heights Homeowners Association: (1971-1992) One cubic foot of records related to dues, membership, covenants, by laws, neighborhood watch annual meetings, correspondence, maps, letterhead, and minutes of the Broadmoor Heights Homeowners Association.
Brockhurst Ranch Album: One album of black & white and color photographs of Brockhurst Boys Ranch. The facility opened in 1964 as a residential treatment facility for troubled youth.
Brossman,Virginia Slide Collection: Two cubic feet of color slides from local travel writer and photographer, Virginia Brossman. Her work appeared in numerous regional travel publications, and the collection includes several hundred examples of her work.
Brown Palace Investment Company Collection: (1922-1937) One hardbound book outlining the creation, business practices of, and selling and liquidation of the Brown Palace Investment Company.
Bueler, Gladys Collection: Three cubic feet of photographs, ephemera, articles, books and other materials relating to the personal and professional life of local historian, Gladys Bueler. Lecture notes and research materials on topics concerning local and state history are included. Featured topics are the Broadmoor Hotel, Helen Hunt Jackson, First Congregational Church of Colorado Springs, mining, American Indians, and the Catholic Church.

Caledonian Society of Colorado Springs: (1897-1934) Three scrapbooks documenting the members, activities and correspondence of the organization dedicated to celebrating the Scottish Heritage of their members residing in the Pikes Peak Region.
Carpenter Family Collection: (1906-2007) One folder of correspondence, stationary and photographs pertaining to the home of Clarence and Josephine Lewis Carpenter, located at 41 West Cache La Poudre in Colorado Springs. The house was torn down in 2007 by the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center to build a parking lot.
Carpenters Union Collection: Seven Cubic Feet. The collection consists of union meeting minutes, membership rolls, dues and fines ledgers, and other items. The eight Colorado local unions are represented: Local 362-Pueblo, Local 417-Colorado City, Local 515-Colorado Springs, Local 547-Cripple Creek, Local 1173-Trinidad, Local 1637-La Junta, Local 1958-Alamosa and Local 2467-Florence.
Cassel, Margaret (Peggy) Collection: Two cubic feet of photographs, ephemera, news clippings, and albums related to Colorado Springs Police Officer Margaret “Peggy” Cassel. Ms. Cassel served on the CSPD Honor Guard and participated in the World Police and Fire Games in Colorado Springs in 1993, and in Calgary in 1997.
Chilcott, George Collection: (1863-1972) One folder of correspondence and photocopies documenting the service of George M. Chilcott as a member of the Colorado Territorial Legislature, Register at the U.S. Land Office in Golden, Colorado from 1863-1866, and a Colorado State Senator.
City of Colorado Springs, Engineering Department: (1899-1905) One photograph album circa 1899-1905 featuring engineering projects throughout the city. Subjects include reservoirs, canals, storm sewers, irrigation ditches, bridges and storm damage.
Claus, Glennis Collection: (1909-1980) One folder of clippings and ephemera related to Garfield Elementary School in Colorado Springs. Claus served as the secretary of Garfield School at the time of its closing in 1980.
Coil, Clarence Collection: Three cubic feet of letters, photographs, negatives, maps, ephemera, newspaper articles, and photo albums relating to the life and interests of Clarence Coil. Subjects include: Pikes Peak Range Riders, the Air force Academy, the AdAmAn Club, mineral collecting, Colorado scenery, Coil’s family members, the Broadmoor, Colorado Springs High School’s football team, clubs and Colorado Springs companies. Also includes collection of mineral samples housed in artifacts.
Cole Collection: (1904-2012) One cubic foot of materials related to the personal and professional lives of artists Artus and Ann Van Briggle. Materials consist of advertisements, newspaper and magazine articles, a scrapbook, a cash book, a certificate book, a binder of pencil drawn pottery designs, photographs, notes on making pottery and glaze, maps of the Van Briggle building, two histories of Van Briggle Pottery, timelines, and letters. Also includes two photographs of the Waldo Canyon Fire (June/July, 2012).
Colorado Federation of Jane Jefferson Democratic Clubs: One scrapbook album and two folders of material related to the activities and history of the organization. Collection includes photographs, minutes, clippings, certificates, brochures, membership packets and ephemera.
Colorado Springs Art Guild: Six cubic feet of materials related to the organization, its activities, and its members.
Colorado Springs Centennial Inc. Collection: (1972) Three folders of correspondence, clippings and programs from the Centennial Celebration of the City of Colorado Springs.
Conover Collection: One scrapbook and one Colorado Springs Centennial Medallion. Scrapbook has wooden cover attached with screws, and features photographs, articles, and ephemera regarding Pikes Peak Range Riders. P.P. Range Riders are group of horseback riders who promote Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo. Scrapbook also has materials focusing on Cecil McKissick and Colorado Springs Police Department.
Conover, Dorothy Smith Collection: One third cubic foot of ephemera and documents relating to social and academic life of Dorothy Smith Conover. Includes seven yearbooks from Colorado College housed in yearbook collection.
Cooper, Francis Valentine Collection: One third cubic foot of valentines and ephemera which belonged to Frances Cooper.
Cragin, Frances Whittemore Collection: (1900-1930) Ten cubic feet of material documenting American Indian culture as well as the early Spanish, French, and American exploration and settlement of the West. Cramer Materials: Two children’s books; Little Brown Koko, by Blanche Seale Hunt, and The Picture and Rhyme Book, by Fern Bisel Peat. The character Little Brown Koko first appeared in The Household Magazine in 1935.
Crouch, Lois Collection: Seven cubic feet of material related to the life and work of Lois Crouch, world-renowned Van Briggle Pottery expert. Ms. Crouch collected Van Briggle Pottery and published several books documenting the history of this well known Art Nouveau Pottery. Downtown Lions Club: Twelve cubic feet of material documenting Club activities including membership lists, correspondence, committee work, charity functions, leadership, newsletters and community activities.
Driscoll, Dr. William E. Collection: (1898-1908) Two cubic feet of material related to the Cripple Creek District medical practice of Dr. Driscoll. Collection includes photographs, correspondence and patient log-books. Dr. Driscoll was a practicing physician, medical examiner, Teller County Physician, and railroad surgeon for the Midland Terminal, Florence and Cripple Creek, and Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek Railroads.

Edwards, Dean and Peg Collection: Nine cubic feet of folk-life material documenting the rich cultural history of square dancing in the Pikes Peak Region. The collection includes hundreds of photographs, historic folk music records and sheet music, books, scrapbooks, and correspondence. Dean Edwards is an internationally renowned square dance caller and teacher, and he is largely responsible for the reintroduction of historic dancing to Colorado in the mid-twentieth century. First Methodist Church Scrapbook: (1944-1953) Scrapbook contains press clippings, printed sermons, announcements of activities, publications regarding Easter Sunrise Services in the Garden of the Gods, and ephemera related to First Methodist Church, its pastors, and its members.
Fountain Homemakers Collection: (1914-1996) One and one half cubic feet of materials related to the organization. Includes meeting minutes, correspondence, scrapbooks, and history related to the club’s activities.
French, William Manuscript: Drug Store Cowboy, an eleven page manuscript detailing memories of businesses and people in downtown Colorado Springs in 1936.
Friends of Lowell School: One cubic foot of papers related to the activities of the Friends of Lowell School, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the Lowell Elementary School building and its history. Collection includes agendas, minutes, photographs, correspondence, and newspaper clippings.
Froisland, Len Scrapbooks: (circa 1955) Two scrapbooks detailing the history and attractions of Colorado, including information on Cascade, Green Mountain Falls, Woodland Park, Rampart Range Road, Colorado Springs, Manitou Park, Leadville, Fairplay, and other Colorado Towns.

Gammon Family Collection: (1880 – 1940) Six cubic feet of materials related to the Gammon family, who founded and lived in Ramah, Colorado. Julien Gammon’s brand was issued by El Paso County in 1874. Includes scrapbook of Lemuel Gammon, photographs of the family and family property, ledgers of the Ranch and the mercantile store, and other materials.
Garden of the Gods Neighborhood Association: (1992-2000) One folder of papers of the Garden of the Gods Neighborhood Association. Materials include membership lists, correspondence, financial records, reports, and newsletters.
Garstin Family Collection: Two cubic feet of correspondence, personal writing, business documents, and ephemera related to the Garstin Family. Family photographs, newspaper clippings, and a scrapbook are also included. William Garstin was a surveyor and businessman in Colorado Springs.
Gorman, Grant Collection: (circa 1873-1953) Two cubic feet of miscellaneous ledger books for El Paso County School Districts numbers 5, 9, 11, 12, 14, 18, 27, 28, 37, 38, and 48. Collection also includes a ledger of teacher applicants in 1873, the County Superintendent’s Record Book of 1911-1912 used by Inez Johnson Lewis, and a record book of school district consolidations from 1950 -1953 created by County Superintendent Lucy S. Perry. The collection belonged to Donor’s father, Norton Gorman, who was a former El Paso County Superintendent of Schools.
Goshen Sisters Collection: Two cubic feet of photographs and papers created by Mary and Helen Goshen. The sisters (never married) were born and raised in Colorado Springs. Collection includes hand-made wooden photograph albums, a family recipe book, and a stereoscope series published by the Quaker Oats Company in 1906 entitled “Around the World Series.”
Gould Family Collection: One eight cubic foot containing photographs and ephemera related to the Pikes Peak Region. Photographs of local tourist attractions include images of Seven Falls, the Broadmoor Hotel, Cheyenne Canon, Pikes Peak, Crystal Park, Balanced Rock in Garden of the Gods, Glen Eyrie, the Hidden Inn, and Manitou Springs. Photographs also include images of Colorado College, hiking, picnicking, St. Mary’s Cathedral, Penrose-Carnegie Library, the Starsmore Home on South Nevada Avenue, and the El Paso County Clerk’s office. Other photographs of Echo Mountain and Mt. Lowe in California are also included.
Grand Army of the Republic Post #22 Collection: (1895-1941) about 3 cubic feet of materials related to the local chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic including Personal War Sketches, the burial book, meeting minutes, and other materials relating to the chapter activities. The Grand Army of the Republic was an organization of veteran Union Soldiers who served in the Civil War (1861-1865). Granger School District #34: (1909-1934) One third cubic foot of school census lists and Teacher’s Registers for School District #34 which include student names, grades and absences.
Gray, Cortina and Robert: Photographs including images of family and home on E Bijou, deer, the Red Elk Hotel, Pikes Peak, and the Liller school. Other items include diplomas and certificates, Camp Carson advertisement, Red Cross items, World War II ration book, scrapbooks, and journal contacting hand written stories and poems.
Grimes Family Collection: (1890- 2000) Four folders of photographs, clippings, and typed genealogical and historical information related to the family of O.P. and Minnie Grimes of Colorado Springs. O.P. Grimes was a former sheriff of El Paso County, and owner of a chain of Piggly Wiggly stores throughout the west.

Halfway House Collection: One half cubic foot of materials including a scrapbook, photograph album, clippings and slides which document the activities of the Halfway House, a residential facility founded in 1926 at 12 East Boulder Street, which encouraged convalescing patients to participate in occupational therapy during their recovery.
Hanford, Dr. Family Collection: (Marsh Donation) Medical dictionary published in 1785 in London; copy of the first of three volumes of A System of the Anatomy of the Human Body, by Andrew Fyfe, published in 1806 in Scotland; newspaper article from an unknown source regarding the abdication and marriage of King Edward VIII of England; and newspaper article regarding discovery of cave in Garden of the Gods.
Harper, Mrs. W.D. Manuscript: (1898-1906) Titled – Of Events and Landmarks in the Early History of El Paso County, manuscript was read before the Zebulon Pike Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution on February 22, 1898, and again at the Pikes Peak Centennial in September of 1906.
Hassell Family Collection: (1900-1983) One half cubic foot of photograph albums and the 1908 diary of Julia Hassell Lipsey, written when she was a child.
Heins Signs Collection: Two cubic feet of photographs, books, and design ephemera related to Ray Heins’ sign painting business in Colorado.
Helen Hunt Jackson Commemorative Council Inc. Collection: One cubic foot of ephemera and photographs relating to Helen Hunt Jackson, and also records and letters from the Helen Hunt Jackson Commemorative Council Inc. Copies of a play about Helen Hunt Jackson and materials relating to a possible movie made from the play are included as well as information on Rancho Camolus.
Heller, Dorothy Collection: Three cubic feet of materials related to the personal and professional lives of local artist Larry Heller and his wife Dorothy, who was a strong supporter of the local art scene. Collection includes photographs and scrapbooks documenting Larry’s work with Alexander Films and Dorothy’s career as a Colorado Springs police officer and social investigator. Henderson, Alva W. Collection: contains materials related to the life and career of Alva W. Henderson, secretary of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce. Collection includes diary entries, address books, memory book (1909-1918) what contains information on the Pikes Peak Ocean to Ocean Highway, and condolence letters to Alva’s wife, Irene, after his death. Related collections are the Oliver S. Bowman Collection and the Sophie Rath Thomas Collection.
Here Lies Colorado Springs Collection: Five cubic feet of papers related to the publication of the book regarding residents of Evergreen Cemetery. Collection includes nominations, submissions, and various edited versions of the final publication.
HI-FI Investors Club: (1961-1990) Three cubic feet of materials related to the investment activities of this local women’s group.
Hobbs Family Photographs: Twenty-six photographs from the Hobbs Family. Images include grazing buffalo, swans on Lake Clara, people spending time in parks, Castle Rock, an all boys class, Garden of the Gods, Denver, Antlers Hotel, Seven Falls, Helen Hunt Falls, Helen Hunt Jackson’s grave, horses plowing a field, a Denver depot, Colorado landscapes, men working in the fields, Pikes Peak, Balanced Rock, Manitou Springs, Esther Gold, “Aunt Spar,” Howard Miller, Iron Spring Building, and Cripple Creek.

Howbert Collection: (1896) One third cubic feet of materials related to the Howbert family. Includes one letter written by Irving Howbert to Stanton. Newspaper article accompanied letter; also written by Howbert to Senator Wollcott. Materials discuss Republican convention in St. Louis.

Iles Family Collection: One half cubic foot of manuscripts, photographs, and correspondence related to the Alfred Bennet Iles family. Collection includes Iles’ memoir, “The Log of a Sea-Going Pioneer,” British navy documents, United States Citizenship papers and materials related to Iles’ life as a miner and adventurer in Alaska and the American West. Jackson, Areba Collection: Four cubic feet of material related to the life and work of Civil Rights Activist and Colorado Springs resident Gretchen McRae. The first African-American woman to run for City Council in 1943, McRae published A Free Republic, a journal dedicated to discussing inequalities in American Society. Jackson, Donald Collection: One and one tenth cubic feet of material from one of the greatest documentary editors and Lewis and Clark scholars of the twentieth century. Donald Jackson was the editor of The Journals of Zebulon Montgomery Pike and author of dozens of important works on western exploration and the life of Thomas Jefferson. The Jackson Collection consists of only his research and bibliographic notes pertaining to several of his most important publications. This collection lends itself to scholarly research and therefore we ask that you contact the Archivist directly to discuss its use (719-385-5649).
Johnson Booklet: Contains information on long distance telephone service and rates for the year 1924.
Johnson Pamphlets: Two pamphlets related to Pikes Peak Region Tourism. One for Seven falls, and the other for The Cave of the Winds.
Jones Family Photograph Collection: (1911-1945) One third cubic foot of family photographs. Subjects include family members, friends, landmarks, scenic views, Colorado Springs buildings, and family pets. Collection also includes other materials such as a receipt, a tally sheet, postcard, and a newspaper article.
Joslyn Graphics: Two panoramic photographs, each approximately four feet long, printed on Jetfilm. Photographs taken by William Joslyn. Each depicts Elbert County Oat Threshing in 2002 and 2004.

Kennis, Carol Collection: (1970-1978) One fourth cubic foot of materials related to student activities at West Junior High School and Coronado High School in Colorado Springs. Collection includes choral concert programs, dance programs, student newspapers and literary publications as well as a 1978 Silver Spruce yearbook from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO.
Kerr, James Hutchinson Scrapbooks: Two cubic feet of scrapbooks volumes IV, V, VI, VII, and VIII. Professor Kerr, an early El Paso County resident, professor of science at Colorado College, state legislator, local businessman, author, and historian, documented El Paso County Pioneers and events through compiling scrapbooks. The scrapbooks contain biographic information on numerous individuals as well as copies of Kerr’s own published articles in local newspapers.
Krause Collection: Six and one fourth cubic feet of books, artifacts, and materials related to George A. Krause and his involvement in early Colorado Springs history.
Kunkle , Paul T.: One folder of color photographs, photocopies, and business cards of Paul T. Kunkle, who was an expert in the chair caning craft. Photographs document Kunkle’s caning demonstrations at Bancroft Park and Rock Ledge Ranch in Colorado Springs.

Leeker, Josephine Brown Collection: Photographs of Garden of the Gods (specifically Siamese Twins formation, Kissing Camels, Cathedral Spires, Three Graces, Balanced Rock, Gateway, Gift Shop, The Bear and Seal formation, Gnarled Cedar at Hidden Inn, “Harry Louder” formation, and “The Sentinel of the Garden”), and the Mt. Manitou Summit. A package for storing the souvenir photographs from Garden of the Gods is also included.

Scrapbook details life at High Valley Farm in Colorado Springs and includes photographs of various members of the Lilly family including Terrance, Gene, Romaine, Terry, Romie, and India Lilly.
Lilly, Terence WWII Collection: One half cubic foot of material related to WWII. Includes a scrapbook documenting the local Red Cross Blood Drive, created by Mrs. Eugene Lilly, Chair of the Blood Drive Committee, and photographs of the blood drive activities at the Fine Arts Center. Collection also contains gasoline ration cards and other period ephemera.
Lipsey, John J. Collection: (1955-1969) Three folders of correspondence, typescripts and clippings pertaining to the life and work of the local author, book dealer, and newspaper columnist. Lipsey penned a history-based column entitled “Lipsey Dixit” in the Colorado Springs Free Press from 1954-1957.
Loomis, Sara Cartwright Jackson Collection: (1893-1970) Forty cubic feet of photographs, diaries and voluminous correspondence between Sara Loomis and her friends and family. Sara Cartwright (nee Jackson) Loomis attended Cutler Academy in the 1890s, married local physician Dr. Phillip Loomis, and raised two children in Colorado Springs. All the while, Loomis documented her daily life through photography and prolific diaries.

MacLaren, Thomas: Contains a portfolio, sketchbook, Christmas card, invoice, photographs of buildings, the Reprint from Pencil Point Dec 1926, and Student Drawings and Sketches reprinted from American Architect in March 1925.

McAllister House Museum Collection: Four audio cassette tapes and a transcript of interview with Vesta Tutt, member of The National Society of the Colonial Dames in Colorado. She describes history of McAllister House, and how it became a museum. Also included is McAllister House Museum Book which describes McAllister family history and information and photographs of the furnishings.
McClurg, Virginia and Gilbert Collection: One and one sixth cubic feet of material related to Virginia McClurg’s efforts to create Mesa Verde National Park in 1906. The collection also contains personal and business papers related to both Virginia and her husband Gilbert – a nationally renowned author and public lecturer. Also of interest are papers and a scrapbook from the Colorado Cliff Dwellings Association, a women’s group who publicly campaigned for preservation of the Mesa Verde area when the destruction of the ruins by treasure hunters appeared imminent. McKay, Dr. Douglas R. Collection: Seven cubic feet of personal and professional papers, photographs, newspaper and magazine articles (many photocopied), correspondences, notes, research materials, microfilm, and slides relating to the life, career, and research interests of Dr. Douglas R. McKay. Research interests include tuberculosis sanatoria (particularly Cragmor), culture and entertainment and murder and mayhem in Colorado gold camps, and derisive humor about Mormons in American literature and culture.
McKay, Dr. Frederick S. (DDS) – 1/3 cubic feet. Collection contains items relating to Dr. McKay’s discoveries around “Colorado Brown Stain” on teeth. Many organizations thanked him for his contributions to dentistry. Items include a booklet, correspondence, and awards certificates. You can learn more about Dr. F.S. McLean Material: (1918) Single copy of the Lever from Colorado Springs High School.
McLeod Collection: Twenty Gold Fever pamphlets by Rufus Porter, four Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo souvenir programs, and one photograph of the “Girl of the West” with other girls who were her aids. Pamphlets describe the early history of Cripple Creek. Rodeo programs list all rodeo events, times, and locations. “Girl of the West” presided over all the rodeo functions; in photograph she is sitting in rodeo’s convertible with other girls acting as her aids.

Melugin, Ida Chambers: (1890-1955) Four Cubic feet of material related to the life and work of Ida Chambers Melugin and her family. Includes photographs, diaries, physician’s memorandum books, a photograph button of Dr. Melugin (Ida’s husband), and the research files of quilting scholar Carolyn O’Bagy Davis who published a book; Quilted All Day: The Prairie Journals of Ida Chambers Melugin, and curated a quilting exhibit reflecting Ida Chamber Melugin’s life working quilts.

Miller Postcards: Four postcards; one depicts Manitou, Colorado, the second the Royal Gorge, the third the Broadmoor Hotel, and the fourth First Methodist Church.
Miller, Nellie Burget Collection: Fourteen cubic feet of material primarily related to Burget Miller’s role as Poet Laureate of the State of Colorado from 1923 – 1952, her poetry manuscripts and publications, as well as materials documenting her involvement in various civic organizations. Norris, Sophie Beauveau Collection: (1900-1940) A collection of 16 scrapbooks containing photographs, pencil sketches, greeting cards and ephemera. Beauveau Norris traveled extensively, came to Cragmor Sanitarium after contracting tuberculosis and eventually moved to the Broadmoor area.

Olson Collection: The Round Dance Book and Round Dance Records, by Lloyd Shaw, three “Here’s How to Learn and Enjoy Bar Nothin’ Squares” pamphlets, and two framed Myron Wood photographs. One photograph shows snow covered mountain top and the second shows man on horse with two cattle next to a stream.

Palmer, Leroy Scrapbook: (1922-1957) Scrapbook and photograph album. Scrapbook contains postcards and ephemera including 1928 drivers license, tickets to sporting events, greeting cards, a matchbook promoting boxing match between Joe Louis and Mac Schmeling, hunting licenses, a souvenir telegram from Pikes Peak, and numerous articles on gang/Mafia activities related to bootlegging in Chicago and New York. Scrapbook also contains details of illegal drinking and gambling at Buzzards Roost, in the 300 block of East Costilla, and the manslaughter-trial of Leroy Palmer after fatally injuring a pedestrian in an auto accident. Photograph album created by Leroy Palmer contains images of Payne Chapel, Colorado Springs residences, Garden of the Gods, auto garages, automobiles, Pikes Peak, Manitou Springs, and an unidentified African-American family and friends.

Pope Family Collection: (1885-1910) One and one third cubic feet of material related to the Pope Brothers Ranch and the early development of the Pikeview Mine in northwest El Paso County during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Prock, John Homestead Papers: (1885-1890) One folder photocopied homestead papers belonging to John Prock of El Paso County, Colorado. John and his mother Jane Prick homesteaded land just east of Monument and just south of the Douglas County line. The original homestead cabin stands near Furrow Road Intersection.

Quota Club: Two cubic feet of papers related to the activities of the Quota Club of Colorado Springs. Collection includes reports, minutes, correspondence, clippings, and programs related to activities of the club and their fundraising efforts toward the hearing impaired and the prevention of domestic violence.

Ranching Diary: (1901) Small, leather, personal diary related to ranching. Includes prices for beef and accounts kept for February 11, 1901- February 16, 1901. Unknown diarist.
Redden, Barbara Jean Collection: (1980-1990) One eighth of a cubic foot of photographs, letters, ephemera, and one scrapbook relating to Barbara Jean Redden and her work at the Myron Stratton Home. Includes images of children who lived at the home while she was there working.
Remick, Otis Memorial Collection: 1 cubic foot of materials relating to Major Otis Remick’s service in the Civil War. Major Remick served with the 1st and 11th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Materials include diaries, scrapbooks, correspondence, and newspaper clippings.
Robbins Collection: Dr. J.G. Shoun’s day book which lists his patients’ names. With some patients, the total cost of the appointment is listed, as is the treatment they received. Also included is a shares certificate issued to Hale on September 25th, 1916 for two shares of stock in Fairfax Hospital in Oklahoma.
Robinson Family Collection: (1933-1947) 1 cubic foot of materials related to the Robinson family of Colorado Springs and the Robinson Grain Company. Includes photographs, genealogy, ephemera and other materials.
Rosamont Park Incorporation Document: (1894) One document detailing shareholders in the summer resort community of Rosamont Park , located on the south slope of Pikes Peak on the road to Lake Moraine.
Red Rock Canyon Development Collection: (1966-2003) One third cubic foot of minutes, correspondence, reports, maps, proposals, photographs, and clippings related to the proposed Red Rock Canyon Development Project and potential annexation to the city of Manitou Springs, Colorado. Included in the collection are materials documenting public opposition to the development and the creation of of an open space park by the city of Colorado Springs.
Reiter Collection: Two red, scenic view books with photographs of views from the Colorado Springs & Cripple Creek District Railway. First called Over Cañon and Crag to the Land of Gold includes photographs of South Cheyenne Cañon, The Devil’s Slide, Cathedral Park, mines in Cripple Creek, town of Cripple Creek, and town of Victor. The second called The Rocky Mountain View Book contains photographs of Colorado scenery, Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, and Denver.

Contains maps, inventory forms and photographs of the Survey Report for Historical and Architectural Survey of Downtown Colorado Springs 2003-2004, results from city planning survey, inventory forms and photographs from survey done on the Westside of Colorado Springs, and the Shooks Run Inventory of Historic Sites.
Schellhorn Booklet: Single souvenir program created by the Colorado Springs Junior Chamber of Commerce for the Jaycee Ranch Chuck Wagon Dinner. Program includes black and white photograph of attendees accompanied by signatures.
Schnoes Ephemera: Piece of paper recovered from Waldo Canyon Fire burn site. Paper is singed on all sides, and has Thomas Jefferson quote printed on it.
Scott, Vera Gang: Four cubic feet of materials relating to the life of Vera Gang Scott. Scott was the first African American principal in Colorado Springs. Vera Gang Scott worked at East Junior High and Garfield Elementary School, and in 1997, the Vera Gang Scott Elementary School opened.

Shafer, Elizabeth Collection: (1935-1957) Four cubic feet of scrapbooks and files created by local resident Elizabeth Shafer that document a range of subjects from 1935-1957. Topics include the British Royal family, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and various Colorado Springs businesses. Click here to see the Inventory.
Sheff Estate Collection: One half cubic foot of photographs, letters, ephemera, and articles relating to the Sheff family and the family business: Sheff and Sons Motor Company. Also included are histories of Broadmoor, North End, and downtown neighborhood homes, and a framed graphic regarding a motorcycle trip to the top of Pikes Peak.
Sheldon, A.Z. Diary: (1863-1880) One diary and transcript. Sheldon, an early resident of El Paso County, documented daily life in the Pikes Peak Region in approximately 5,000 diary entries over 262 pages. Topics included are the growth and development of Colorado City, early experiment in ranching and farming, the arrival of railroads, and his work over two decades as a surveyor for El Paso County.
Shoup Business Collection: Collection includes materials from Merrill Shoup’s business office, including his law office, and the Golden Cycle Mining and Milling Corporation.
Simpich Collection: One third cubic foot of ephemera, newsclippings, and catalogs from Simpich Character Dolls of Old Colorado City.
Slocum, Sheriff Ray Collection: (1947-1949) One cubic foot of scrapbooks, photograph albums, documents and loose photographs related to the career of El Paso County Sheriff Ray Slocum.
Smith, Carlos Scrapbook: (ca. 1900) Contains newspaper clippings regarding fossils, minerals, and the geology and archaeology of the west.
Sociability Tour Scrapbook: Compiled by Dan L. Kennedy in 1935, the scrapbook documents the Colorado – Kansas- Texas – Oklahoma “Goodwill Tour” taken by a group of prominent Colorado Springs businessmen.

Spaulding Family Collection: One sixth cubic foot of materials relating to the history and accomplishments of the Spaulding family. Includes excerpts from Lee Spaulding’s diary (1823-1824).

Stote, Helen Collection: (1903-1919) One folder of material containing programs and ephemera pertaining to Colorado Springs Schools, a reception and ball for Governor Oliver Shoup, musical concerts, a pamphlet containing the names of all Colorado Springs school teachers in 1915-1916, and school district letterhead.
Stratton, Winfield Scott Collection: (1891-1965) Over 500 cubic feet of papers, minutes, ledgers and records related to the personal and business life of Cripple Creek mining millionaire Winfield Scott Stratton. The bulk of the material pertains to various business enterprises of Stratton and later, of the Myron Stratton Home and the trustees of Stratton’s estate. Collection includes papers requesting financial assistance from W.S. Stratton, business correspondence, business ledgers, Cheyenne Ditch Company, Fountain Ditch Company, real estate, the Brown Palace papers, Brook Side Water Company, Colorado Springs and Interurban Railway and other railway companies, Colorado Springs Rapid Transit, the Gravity Car Coupling Company, Boulevard Park, Camp Stratton and Stratton Park, the Midland Oil Company, the S.S. Winfield S. Stratton Liberty Ship launch, court cases, and photographs of the Myron Stratton Home area, Stratton Meadows, street cars, and various scenes around the Pikes Peak Region. Taylor, Grace Family Collection: (1969-1984) Three folders of color photographs, news clippings, and ephemera related to Grace and Joe Taylor and the Taylor Travel Agency in Colorado Springs.
Tefft Judge Magazine Collection: (circa 1890s) Thirty-five issues of Illustrated Weekly inserts from Judge Magazine.
Templeton, W.G. Family Collection: Three (3) cubic feet of materials related to the Templeton Family, including Rev. William G., Lillie, Henrietta, Oscar, Fay, Clyde, and Zillah Templeton. Includes papers and photographs related to the family. Rev. William G. Templeton (1851-1919) moved to Colorado Springs in 1897 as a minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In the early 1900’s, W.G. Templeton patented inventions such as a cheese cutter, a postage vending machine, an oil pump, storage bins and a spring-less scale.
Teslrer Family Collection: (1927-1979) Three fourths cubic foot of materials related to the Teslrer Family of Colorado. Materials include thirty-three mounted photographs of the family, twenty-one letters from family members and friends, four scrapbooks, one framed photograph of a group of children, and three loose photographs.
Titmus Collection: Photographs and glass plate negatives of buildings, individuals, and groups of people in Victor, CO. Also includes ephemera relating to photography.

United States Army Signal Corp Collection: 2 cubic feet. (1873-1894) Pikes Peak became the second Signal Service Station in 1873. The men stationed to the Signal Service Station observed the weather atop Pikes Peak to identify weather patterns. The Signal Service later became known as the Weather Bureau and the National Weather Service. Collection includes ledgers, correspondence, reports, and annals.
Ute Pass Wagon Road Ledger: (1867) One ledger created by the Ute Pass Wagon Road Company which details expenses, subscribers, and an index.

Visiting Nurse Association: (1914-1986) One third cubic foot of papers related to the Visiting Nurse Association of Colorado Springs. Materials include photocopied correspondence, typed histories of the organization, and newsletters.

Walker Collection: DVDs, video tapes, photographs, newspaper clippings, plans, proposals, reports, and other materials related to Starsmore Discovery Center, Garden of the Gods, the Goss family, and the Hennrich family.
Waldo Canyon Fire Map Collection: (2012) Six maps of various sizes. First shows preliminary damage assessment of Mountain shadows neighborhood July 2nd, 2012. Second shows progression of fire from June 23rd, 2012 to July 4th, 2012. Third shows ownership of property affected by Waldo Canyon Fire by acreage July 1st, 2012. Fourth is briefing map used June 27th, 2012. Fifth is briefing map used July 5th, 2012. Sixth shows size, location, and movement of fire as well as movements of firefighters, and resources for evacuees.
Weimer Family Collection: (1920-1970) One third cubic foot of ephemera, stationary, mounted souvenir photographs, place mats, and black and white photographs of Seven Falls. Collection also includes a City of Colorado Springs 1923 Annual Report and a customer bag from Fashion Bar. The Weimer family purchased Seven Falls in 1905 for $250,000 and owned it until 1946.
Willis, Willet R. Collection: Three cubic feet of papers, reports, and documents pertaining to the life of a local geologist and chemistry teacher at Colorado Springs High School (now Palmer High School) until 1947. Instrumental in the founding of the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society, Willis served as its first president.
Wolfe, John Diary: (1864) Handwritten diary and typed transcript describing activities of John Wolfe, a member of the Third Colorado Cavalry. Diary begins on September 11, 1864 and ends abruptly on November 27, 1864 (just two days prior to the Sand Creek Massacre).
Woolley Collection: Two photographs of the Colorado Springs Police Department. The first taken in 1951 of whole department, the second taken of police investigation. Also includes retirement badge.
Works Progress Administration: (1936-1939) One half cubic foot of Federal Writers Project Papers. Collection includes narratives on Pikes Peak Regional History, Folklore, and Arts and Culture.
