Over the past 14 years, the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum Junior Docent program has worked with hundreds of local teens to ignite curiosity for visitors. Students entering 9th through 12th grade participate in the program to make meaningful connections to the cultural history of the Pikes Peak region. Junior Docents help the CSPM through a variety of service opportunities in our education, collections, and marketing departments. This July, we are thrilled to recognize Junior Docent Mentor Macey Breckon as the Volunteer of the Month!
Macey joined the Junior Docent Program in 2025. As a Junior Docent, she welcomed and shared local history with visitors. Macey always brought her glowing smile and excitement for history for every guest interaction. Macey stated, “My favorite cart was the City of Sunshine exhibit, as I loved showing people the photos, listing facts, and having discussions with the public.” Throughout the program, she always went above and beyond to help the CSPM Education Team with visitor experiences.
In 2026, The CSPM Education Team invited her to expand her Junior Docent responsibilities as the first Junior Docent Mentor. This role’s purpose was to serve as a leader for Junior Docents by answering questions and training them on how they can engage all ages at their Hands-on-History Stations. Macey not only took on these additional tasks enthusiastically, but she further expanded her role by supporting other museum needs. She helped welcome visitors at the front desk. She researched how other museums provide guest experiences. Over the summer she worked a total of 80.85 hours which was double her original commitment to the museum.

“The program has encouraged me to become more social and taught me how to trust my own instinct. I used to be much more socially anxious and insecure of my own decisions but being a Junior Docent and Junior Docent Mentor has given me the space to learn how to talk to people, experiment with different methods and processes, and trust myself to know what to do. I especially love talking about history, having discussions with like-minded people, and teaching kids and the public about our local history.”
Macey felt that the Junior Docent Program also helped her discover her passion for teaching others. She plans to attend University of Northern Colorado – Greeley to study history in the fall. She hopes to also include museum studies in her future coursework.
“I don’t know where life may take me, but I do know that my passion for history will always be a part of it.”
