May Volunteer of the Month: Tanja Britton

Tanja Britton joined the Museum’s volunteer team in the spring of 2015.  Over the past five years Tanja has volunteered as an adult tour docent, but has also supported many of our special events, like the Festival of Lights Family Fun Day. She decided to join the museum to learn more about regional history and to share her knowledge with our visitors. In addition to growing her knowledge of regional history, she also enjoys connecting with other volunteers during our training sessions, “I greatly benefit from the shared expertise of the museum staff, as well as the experiences of my fellow volunteers.”

I also find it extremely gratifying when local, often long-time residents learn new details about people or events in Colorado Springs during their visits. It’s like filling in missing puzzle pieces, and all of a sudden the interconnectedness of different facts becomes evident."

“Tanja loves to learn and grow in her knowledge of Pikes Peak regional history,” shared Meg Poole, CSPM Program Coordinator, “she is always asking great questions and conducting her own research.”  Tanja has an affinity for medical history and most enjoys the Museum’s “City of Sunshine” exhibit, “I never tire of talking about our city’s role as a nationally and internationally-known health resort for the treatment of tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases.”

She also enjoys interpreting the history of Helen Hunt Jackson and her home, “Her outspoken criticism of the treatment of American Indians and her activism on their behalf shows great personal courage, as it was against the zeitgeist. She stood up for her beliefs, even though they were unpopular.”

When not reading local history books, Tanja enjoys spending time in nature. She loves exploring the natural world and enjoys taking photos of the scenery and regional birds.  Through her husband, who grew up in Security-Widefield, she has been connected to this area off and on for 30 years, and shared “I still pinch myself every morning when I behold Pikes Peak.”
