“Concert for Ukraine” Film Screening

Atticus Wei, a local Cheyenne Mountain High School student, shared his story and virtual concert ‚ÄúConcert for Ukraine‚ÄĚ with Museum visitors and guests. ‚ÄúConcert for Ukraine‚ÄĚ is a 22-minute film featuring songs by various local musicians such as Sergei Vassiliev, the principal clarinetist of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra, and Siuzanna Iglian, a world-renowned bandura player who recently was an accompanist at the Grammy Awards. The unique concert features performers with different backgrounds, but who are all working toward the same goal: Use music to heal and help others in need.¬†

Near the beginning of the war, I saw a news broadcast about the carnage that was happening in Ukraine, and I really wanted to help. I think the war impacts everybody, everybody in the world at a certain level. It’s the biggest refugee event since World War II.

Atticus is a talented musician who plays the piano. In hopes of bringing awareness to the ongoing war in Ukraine, he turned to his passion for music and began to look for collaborative musical performances to share. He reached out to Sergei Vassiliev, a local Ukrainian musician whose family was in the war zone when the war started and who had created a fundraising effort for Ukrainian refugees.

After weeks of recording and editing, Atticus’ virtual concert was posted online and now has nearly 4,000 views on YouTube. The film is dedicated to Vassiliev’s fundraiser, in which donations are used to help the people in Kharkiv (Vassiliev’s hometown) with food, supplies, and emergency travel, among other expenses. As of May 31, 2022, $42,876.65 in life-saving aid had been distributed.¬†

The Museum was honored to provide a venue for a screening of Atticus’ virtual concert. You can view the film in its entirety below, along with a video recap of the event at the Museum.¬†
