We chose to participate in the Freedom to Thrive exhibit because our daughter’s story deserves to be seen as part of the larger human experience, not defined solely by disability, but by resilience, personality, joy, challenge, and love.
As parents, much of our journey has involved learning how to navigate a world that is not always built with accessibility, understanding, or inclusion in mind. At the same time, our daughter has taught us how much beauty, strength, and perspective can exist within a life that others may too quickly misunderstand or underestimate.
We felt it was important to participate because representation matters. Too often, families and individuals living with disabilities are either overlooked or spoken about instead of listened to. We hope that by sharing a small part of our story, people can connect on a more human level and move beyond assumptions or discomfort.
What we hope people walk away with is a deeper sense of empathy and awareness. We hope they leave understanding that every person deserves the opportunity, support, and dignity to thrive in their own way. We also hope people recognize that disability is not something distant or separate from community; it is part of community.
Most importantly, we hope our daughter sees herself reflected in this exhibit and knows that her story, her presence, and her life matter.
