We are thrilled to recognize Kimberly Mitchell, who has served as a Museum Store and events volunteer for nine months, as the February Volunteer of the Month. Kimberly has made volunteering a part of her life because she enjoys “sharing the history of Colorado Springs with shoppers” and utilizing her skills to “organize the store and help make it visually appealing and orderly.” Kimberly consistently goes about and beyond and makes our customers feel welcome.
In the Store, volunteers have special interactions with Museum guests. Kimberly shared, “A memory I have is about a teenage girl who came in with her dad. They remained looking around the Store for quite a while. The daughter zoned in on the corner next to the Museum Store Manager’s office door. The next thing I know, she approached the cash register counter with the Greek-looking tall candle holder that I thought would never sell. The dad asked her a number of times if she was sure she wanted it. She said emphatically she did and already had a perfect place in her room for it. I’ll never forget how excited she was to find it.” In addition to exploring exhibits and learning from programs and activities, the Store provides a fun and unique shopping experience for our guests.
Kimberly has been a delight from the beginning. She's helpful at taking on tasks and great with the customers. She is a wonderful asset to the museum store!"
Leah Koller, Museum Store Manager
Whether volunteers lead tours, welcome guests at the front desk, or sell items in the store, they all share a passion for history, “My favorite topic about local history is eating establishments that no longer exist. Michelle’s, Broncos, Red Top, and Shaky’s Pizza are just some of the notable eating establishments.” In addition to exploring her interest in local history, Kimberly stays busy as a substitute teacher for School District 11. She loves spending time with her kids and her dog and prioritizes supporting her daughter with her pursuit of nursing and her son with his work and interesting hobbies. She enjoys reading, watching ghost-hunting reality shows, and traveling.
Thank you, and Congratulations to Kimberly!
