December Volunteers of the Month: The Girl Scouts of Colorado

Meg Poole, CSPM Programs Coordinator

Each month the Museum staff chooses an individual to recognize as our Volunteer of the Month. Reflecting on our programming over the past year, we realized how integral The Girl Scouts of Colorado have been to the success of our in-person and virtual family activities. We are thrilled to honor this organization whose mission is to “build girls of courage, confidence, character, who make the world a better place.”

When we asked them to help with our upcoming family programs, they enthusiastically responded, “Girl Scouts love to partner with youth-serving community organizations because we are able to strength our relationships in the community and offer programming to families that are comparable to what our partners are doing.” Over the course of 2020 they participated in our four largest family friendly programs and have always gone above and beyond.

Conejos Neighborhood Celebration

On Saturday, February 22 they organized and  facilitated a paper flower making booth for families who attended the Conejos Neighborhood Celebration. This was one of our largest attended events, and we could not have offered this special activity without the efforts of the Girl Scouts.

Colorado Grown Family Fun Day

When we made the decision to change the Colorado Grown Family Fun Day to a virtual celebration, the Girl Scouts didn’t hesitate to prepare a history program and craft for us to share on the website. They presented a live history program and craft session as part of our virtual “Colorado Grown: Celebrating Women’s Suffrage Event” on Facebook.

Night at the Museum

The Night at the Museum was adapted to an outdoor fall stroll. Sarah and her team prepared over 100 STEM activities for families and even join in the fun by dressing up.

Festival of Lights Family Fun

The Girl Scouts contributed 1,000 stickers, pencils and temporary tattoos for the CSPM to add to the holiday activity kits. In addition these special prizes , they prepared a craft video as part of our virtual “Festival of Lights Family Fun” program on Facebook.

Get Involved with the Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts has a variety of ways to get involved right now – even during a pandemic. They’re offering amazing programming to all girls in ways to fit with each girl’s interests and schedule. They have a monthly Badge Series, where girls get an introduction to the badgework online then continue the steps on their own to try new things and earn the badge. They also offer online clubs where girls with similar interests from across the state gather monthly in a virtual setting with a GSCO facilitator. Volunteers are welcome to join and help get a troop started in their area. It’s never too late to join.

We cannot thank The Girl Scouts of Colorado enough for their support of our 2020 programming. It has been a challenging year, and we are so appreciative of how our wonderful partners have found creative ways to contribute to our family events.
