March Volunteer of the Month: Susan Conde

Meg Poole, CSPM Program Coordinator

Susan Conde likes to stay busy, “as an active retired person I need to do more than aimlessly fill time. In the past I have volunteered with animal welfare groups as well as in health care. I decided that I needed to find an entirely different area. So I called the Museum and Meg made everything after that easy.” We are so fortunate that volunteering at the CSPM is one of the ways she has chosen to fill her time! Susan joined the CSPM in the Fall of 2019.  She has supported our programming as an educator and special events volunteer. She has also been a tremendous help by taking on shifts at the front desk. “We love working with Susan and cannot thank her enough for all of her help! She is a natural interpreter – expressive, engaging, and keen to share captivating stories from Museum exhibits with our visitors,” shared Meg Poole, CSPM Program Coordinator.

My favorite memory or recollection is a hard one. I was at the desk and a young girl came in with her family. I think she was probably around 12 years old. She was so awestruck by the lobby and kept exclaiming how awesome it was. Later when I told her the building had  almost been torn down she was aghast! Who could tear down something like that! My thoughts exactly.

Susan has enjoyed engaging with the public as a volunteer and also finding meaningful connections to her own life. Recently, while presenting tours in the Anyplace That is North and West exhibit, she discovered that her father graduated from Colorado College the same year as Dolphus and Effie Stroud, in 1931. She also recalled that in 1981, at a 50th reunion party her parents hosted in honor of that graduating class, she had the opportunity to meet Effie, “I feel so honored to have had the chance to meet that remarkable woman.”

Since the pandemic, Susan’s life has been more quiet, but she is thrilled to have so many family members in town  – 2 sisters, 2 children, 4 grandchildren, her wonderful partner Al, and a her dog Dobby, who is mostly “a good boy”. Thank you to Susan for her service and congratulations!
