June Volunteer of the Month: Lynn Barber - CSPM

June Volunteer of the Month: Lynn Barber

Meg Poole, CSPM Programs Coordinator

The June Volunteer of the Month, Lynn Barber, began volunteering for the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum around six years ago. Her knowledge about the local music community and experience as a tour director made her an invaluable  member of our Program Committee. She recently announced she will be stepping down from the Committee. We will miss Lynn’s great ideas and helpful insight, but wish her well in all her future endeavors! Fortunately, Lynn will continue to support our outdoor Living Landscapes and COS@150 History Stroll program as a guide.

We are saddened that Lynn will be leaving the Program Committee. She has been such a valuable and dedicated member of this committee. Lynn has added so much to help enrich the programs the museum has offered.

People are drawn to volunteering for the CSPM for many reasons. When asked why she first got involved Lynn shared, “I’m fascinated by different cultures, landscapes, history, and people. The museum provides me with stimulation because of its inclusion of all those aspects of the Pikes Peak region in its exhibits and programs. The museum contributes to historical preservation of the communities within this region with such exhibits as The Story of Us, City of Sunshine, and COS@150. Lectures add to that, as I hear local stories about the AdAmAn Club and Garden of the Gods.” In her time at the Museum, Lynn has been fascinated by many aspects of local history, but her favorite story is about “the conflict between gold miners and mine owners during the 1890’s that occurred in the Cripple Creek and Victor area – and spilled over into Colorado Springs. I like the stories because they give me better understanding of this area’s attitudes today.”

One of Lynn’s greatest achievements while serving on the Program’s Committee was planning a lecture presented by award-winning author, Craig Child’s.  In his talk, Craig explored the value of artifacts found in archeological exploration and what those artifacts tell us about people of the past. He also challenged the audience to consider questions of preservation and ethical concerns surrounding excavation. Lynn “loved seeing a large, engaged audience at that talk.”

Thank you for your commitment to the Program Committee for the past 6 years. You are so kind, and so lovely to work with. We will miss you and your contributions to the Pioneers Museum. I hope you are off to enjoy some new and exciting adventures!!

Lynn has many exciting hobbies and interests outside of her work with the Museum. She loves music and sings with the Colorado Springs Chorale.  She has traveled extensively for fun and for her previous work as a tour director.  She is a retired  high school English and journalism teacher from D11 and spent spent two years living in Australia as an exchange teacher. Today she and her husband enjoy spending extended periods of time in Santa Fe. They have two daughters.

Thank you for your service,  Lynn! Congratulations!
