December Volunteer of the Month: Chrys Fotenos - CSPM

December Volunteer of the Month: Chrys Fotenos

Throughout this year, we recognized many dedicated volunteers. The museum relies on over 100 volunteers to support its mission. As our last Volunteer of the Month in 2021, we are delighted to share that this month’s recognition goes to Chrys Fotenos, CSPM Board President.

Chrys and her family moved to Colorado Springs in 1974. She recalls, “Our family went to the Museum when it was still located in the Old Knights of Columbus building. It had case after case of “interesting stuff.” It was fascinating. Since I was new to Colorado Springs, I thought it would be a good idea to volunteer. I signed a form that day and left it at the museum. Within a couple of days, Mrs. Amorita Foster called and asked how I would like to be involved.”

For the past 40 years, Chrys dedicated her time and energy as a CSPM volunteer to supporting a variety of activities– outreach efforts, public programs,  fundraising and more. She assisted with the development of the William C. Henderson History Day Award. She helped publish The Invisible People of the Pikes Peak Region.

One of her favorite volunteer experiences was transcribing the the Grand Army of the Republic Personal War Sketches from 1895. “As I transcribed, I got a bit of a chill at the end of his diary when he wrote that he hoped someone would transcribe his words for future generations. It took over 150 years, but it has been done!”

By 2018, Chrys deepened her involvement by joining the CSPM Board.  Along with other members, she helped guide the institution towards its envisioned future– ignite curiosity and inspire discovery among all residents and visitors in the Pikes Peak region. She feels passionate about the museum’s mission which lead her to step into leadership roles. She currently chairs the Acquisitions Committee. In the past two years, she served as Vice President and President of the CSPM.

Chrys is always there for the museum. She's given decades of service in nearly every imaginable way to help the CSPM preserve and share our community's history. The museum and Colorado Springs are so much better because of it!

At the end of this month, Chrys will be stepping down as CSPM Board President. She will continue to serve on the CSPM Board for another year. We are beyond delighted to recognize Chrys for her leadership and many years of service.
