The New Year is always bittersweet for the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum (CSPM) Staff and Board. It is difficult to say “farewell” to wonderful and dedicated volunteers, but also exciting to welcome new volunteers to join the CSPM Board of Directors. The CSPM Board is comprised of passionate and committed community members that help guide the Museum towards its envisioned future.
Thank you Senator Bernie Herpin, Jan Martin and Linda Sauer
This year, several longtime volunteers are stepping down from the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum Board. As a token of the staff and board’s appreciation, Museum Director Matt Mayberry and Board President Laurel Prud’homme presented each member with a reproduction of an H.L. Standley photograph to thank them for their generous years of service.
All three of these longserving Board Members have provided outstanding service to the CSPM. Through their leadership, the Museum recovered from the economic challenges of the 2009 Great Recession and flourished to become the institution we are today.
Matt Mayberry, CSPM Director
Senator Bernie Herpin
Senator Herpin moved to Colorado Springs to attend the United States Air Force Academy in 1962. Bernie and his wife Linda are passionate about history. They enjoyed attending events at the CSPM and started supporting the institution. After serving on the Colorado Springs City Council and Colorado State Senate, Bernie joined the CSPM Board and Finance Committee in 2015. His unique experience and passion provided valuable insight into the institution’s operations and growth.
Jan Martin
Jan is a native of Colorado Springs and grew up in the Old North End. This deep connection to the City of Colorado Springs drives her dedication to preserving and sharing the community’s history. She has been involved with the museum in different capacities for over 25 years. One of Jan’s favorite memories at the museum is when supporters rallied together to preserve Katherine Lee Bate’s statute view of Pikes Peak in front of the museum’s west front entrance. During her board tenure, she served as Vice President and President. Although she is stepping down as a Board Member, she will continue to serve on the Acquisitions and Finance Committee.
Linda Sauer
As a Colorado Springs native, Linda is committed to the CSPM’s role in providing meaningful programs for the community. For 20 years, she has served in many volunteer roles – beginning with the CSPM’s Friends Board and more recently to fundraising, marketing and program development. During her tenure on the board, she served as the Secretary and Program Committee Chair. She will also continue her involvement with the CSPM as a member of the Program and Marketing Committee and as a youth and family program volunteer.
Welcome New Board Members
Nancy Bernard
Nancy recently retired from her 15 year role as the Fountain Creek Nature Center Supervisor. As a Certified Interpretive Guide and talented educator, the Museum’s education department was fortunate to have Nancy’s support for our volunteer trainings. Nancy’s expertise in public programming and nonprofit operations will be an asset to the CSPM Board.
Danielle Gaffney
Danielle is a Senior Tax Manager at Stockman Kast Ryan and Company. She is passionate about serving her community and has been involved with several local organizations. She joined the CSPM’s Finance Committee in 2021. Her knowledge of finances and community organizations will provide a unique perspective for the CSPM Board.
