Chalktober in Alamo Square Park

Thank you to Lauren Mason, Director of Partnerships for Colorado Springs School District 11, for sharing this article and photographs from the “Chalktober” event on the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum’s grounds.

In early October, more than 1,400 District 11 8th-grade students turned sidewalks into a colorful celebration of liberty. Students brought their creativity to life and turned downtown Colorado Springs into their canvases. The event kicked off at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum on October 2 and continued at Acacia Park on October 3.

This event was the culmination of a month-long, cross-curricular experience, where students explored history, art, geometry, and civic themes through classroom lessons leading up to the big day. As a Peak Experience—a signature D11 learning activity—students applied what they learned in a hands-on, collaborative, and public way, creating lasting memories while connecting with their community. Chalktober was also part of Arts Month in the Pikes Peak Region, celebrating creativity and the power of youth expression.
