Applications for the summer 2025 Junior Docent program are due Monday, May 5.
Over the past 14 years, the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum Junior Docent Program has worked with hundreds of local teens to ignite curiosity for visitors. Students entering 9th through 12th grade with an interest in education, local history, and museums are invited to apply for the 2025 Junior Docent class. Over the course of the summer, teens will make meaningful connections to the cultural history of the Pikes Peak region. Junior Docents will help preserve and share our community’s history through a variety of service opportunities in our education, collections, and marketing departments. Through training and practice, teens will develop important communication, interpretive, and leadership skills.
Junior Docents who complete over 40 hours of service and comply with program policies and expectations will earn a $300 stipend at the end of the summer.

Program FAQ
Who can apply?
- Students entering 9th -12th grade with an interest in local history, museums, and education. You don’t need prior experience or specific knowledge of local history to apply.
- Applicants must be available to attend all training sessions and serve at least 40 hours over the course of the program.
- You must have the consent of a parent/guardian to apply for this program.
Is there a stipend?
Yes! Junior Docents who participate in the required training, complete at least 40 hours of service, and comply with program policies and expectations will earn a $300 stipend at the end of the summer. Junior Docents and their guardians must complete all payment paperwork by the deadline (TBA) to receive the stipend.
What is the program schedule?
Required training is from June 3rd – 5th, 2025 (10am –3pm)
Program duration is from June 6th – August 2nd, 2025 (Junior Docents sign up for 3-hour shifts as their schedule allows – Tuesdays through Saturdays)
This program offers opportunities 5 days a week with an online sign-up process through CERVIS. Families can look through their schedule together and sign-up accordingly. In addition to training, teens are required to serve a minimum amount of 40 hours over the duration of the summer program.
There will be additional opportunities to volunteer during the school year.

What is the CSPM looking for in a Junior Docent?
We are excited about Junior Docent applicants with diverse backgrounds and unique perspectives, interests, and strengths. It is important that you have an interest in museum work, local history, and teaching people of all ages. It is also important the program requirements will work with your summer schedule (see “What is the program schedule?” above) and that you can meet the program expectations. You do not need experience or specific knowledge of local history, but should be enthusiastic about igniting curiosity and inspiring discovery among all residents and visitors.
How do I apply?

- Applications are due May 5, 2025. You may submit your application anytime before the application deadline. Late applications will not be accepted.
- You may consider asking a friend, teacher, parent, or guardian help you edit your application before submitting it.
- When you apply, you will be asked to submit the name, email, and phone number of a teacher, school administrator, or another adult (who is not related to you), who is willing to complete a recommendation form in support of your application. Recommendation forms are due May 8, 2025. Other ideas for adults to ask to complete your form include: a coach, mentor, the leader of an after-school program or activity, or a supervisor from a previous internship or work experience. Applications without a recommendation form will not be considered.
- Make certain your recommender completes the online form they are emailed before the application deadline. Late recommendations will not be accepted.

- After you’ve completed and submitted your application, you will receive an email notification confirming that it has been received.
What can I expect during the interview stage?
- Selected interviewees will be invited to join us for an in-person group interview.
- In your initial application, you will select a date and time to come in for your group interview.
- We will give you further detailed instructions prior to interview date.
- Each interview will last approximately 1 hour. We will ask a series of questions to get to know you better and learn more about your interest in the program. You will also be assigned several partner and group activities to complete.
- Only invited candidates will be asked to attend an in-person interview.
