Women in Colorado Springs
One of the earliest written accounts of life in the Fountain Colony comes from English author Rose Kingsley, whose brother Maurice was the Assistant Treasurer for the Colorado Springs Company. Rose lived in the colony during the winter of 1871-1872. In her book South by West, she vividly described the early colony as only a visitor can. She paid attention to the minute details of daily life including her residence: a hastily constructed one room wooden shack with brown paper lining for warmth.
