Remembering Joyce Vogel - CSPM

Remembering Joyce Vogel

The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum (CSPM) recently lost a beloved member of our volunteer family, who was described by CSPM Curator of History, Leah Davis Witherow, as the Museum’s “guardian, storyteller, and story keeper.” We fondly remember Joyce Vogel for her friendship and countless contributions to the CSPM.

Joyce began volunteering in the 1970s when the CSPM moved from its former home on Kiowa Street to the historic 1903 El Paso County Courthouse. Her knowledge and experience as a newspaper publisher were instrumental in supporting the Museum and helping improve its media coverage. She immediately furthered her engagement by contributing towards the CSPM’s governance, marketing, programs, and events. As Matt Mayberry, CSPM Director, described, “She was comfortable meeting with Mayors and City Managers, but also pitched in to scrub the floors, wash dishes and arrange afternoon teas.” She served as a longtime member and chair of the Friends of the CSPM and as chair of the City Council appointed Museum Advisory Board.

In 1987, she was selected as the recipient of the Lucky Herzberger Award. This annual presentation was a highlight of the Friends Annual Luncheon to recognize the tireless contributions of volunteers like Joyce. This award was established to honor Lucky Herzberger who was deeply committed to her support of the CSPM and the Museum’s Friends before her death. Joyce was also named Volunteer of the Year in 1988. A recognition where staff nominate and vote for a volunteer who has made significant contributions to the CSPM and its mission. Both of these awards recognized Joyce for the following contributions:

  • Attracting new audiences by planning many events over the years including afternoon teas and family programs.
  • Connecting the Museum to the military community with a focus on making all guests feel welcome and comfortable. A value still emulated in the Museum’s mission and vision.
  • Acting as catalyst to the development our most popular family fun day to this day – the CSPM’s annual Festival of Lights.

In the decades Joyce served the museum, she was in so many ways the heart and soul of the institution. She was among one of the last of a dwindling generation of community leaders that helped to save the courthouse and revitalize the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum.
