Marshall and E.J. Sprague Scholarship

Scholarship Description

The Marshall and E.J. Sprague Scholarship is made possible through an endowment to the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum Foundation in honor of Marshall and E.J. Sprague. Each year one $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to a high school junior or senior competing in the Colorado Springs Regional History Day competition held at Colorado College on Saturday, March 3, 2018. The scholarship is intended for college-related expenses.

 Scholarship Eligibility

This scholarship is restricted to participants who are:

1) Currently in 11th or 12th grade;

2) Competing as an individual in any category at the Regional History Day competition held at Colorado College on March 3, 2018.

A statement of agreement must be signed by the selected applicant and the applicant’s parent or guardian acknowledging an intention to attend a two or four-year, degree-granting, accredited institution and that the money will be used for college-related expenses. Students are not restricted to any specific major.

 

Scholarship Guidelines and Requirements

Applications must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2018. Please carefully review the following guidelines. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please note that only the first 25 applications received will be considered for the scholarship.

  1. In addition to an application form (access at cspm.org/history-day), each application should include a letter addressed to the Sprague Scholarship Committee requesting consideration for the scholarship. The letter should contain details about the applicant’s future academic and career goals, a general discussion of the applicant’s interest in history, and an explanation of how the study of history has influenced the applicant’s life.
  2. Each application should include one letter of recommendation from a teacher or administrator familiar with the applicant’s academics and volunteer or work activities. Please submit this with the application.
  3. Each application should include a copy of the process paper (except for those submitting in the Paper category), and an annotated bibliography from the National History Day entry.
  4. Previous Sprague scholarship recipients may not apply.
  5. Successful applications will be reviewed by the scholarship committee. The decision of this committee is final.
  6. Scholarship winner will be announced at the Regional History Day award ceremony on Saturday, March 3. Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend the ceremony.
