A Look Backward at The Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb

Pikes Peak Hill Climb Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum LectureThe Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb originally started by Spencer Penrose in 1916 has now been run for over 100 years.  This presentation will look at how the race has changed over time:  how has the course changed, how have safety measures evolved and how have the cars, divisions and classes changed to encompass new technology and respond to changing road conditions.

 

 

 

About Don Sanborn

Don Sanborn, a second generation Colorado Native, was raised in Cascade, graduated in the MSHS class of ’77 and obtained a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from Colorado State University.  Don is Past President of the AdAmAn club, Past Chairman of the Board of Directors of Barr Camp, has been on the board of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, has been Timing Director and Information Management Officer for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, has been on the Pikes Peak Marathon Race Committee, is Vice President of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb Historical Society and a member of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb Museum Committee.  He has served as commissioner of the Pikes Peak Highway Advisory Committee and the Telecommunications Policy Advisory Committee for the City of Colorado Springs.  He is married and in his free time likes to run, climb mountains, downhill ski and travel with his wife.  Don hales from a family which has been very active on Pikes Peak.  His Grandfather, Don Lawrie, founded and was first President of the Pikes Peak Ski Club, was the first Superintendent of the Pikes Peak Highway and the only person to drive completely off road to the summit of Pikes Peak.  Don’s father and Uncle, Frank and Nick Sanborn both raced in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb.  Nick won the Stock Car division five times and was the Race CEO for many years.
